slimserver - Streaming Audio Server

This package isn’t all that useful unless you own a squeezbox device but even if you don’t have one it might be worth looking into. The slimserver is a big perl app (which sounds kinda ugly) but it works quite well. It runs as a service on the machine you install it on, and then clients can connect to it and stream music from it. Control of what you listen to is handled through a slick web interface that runs on port 9000 of the server machine. You can connect to the server using a squeezbox device, or any software mp3 player (mp3blaster as an example) by connecting to the stream http://servername:9000/stream.mp3, however you will have a lag using a software mp3 player which is annoying when selecting tracks or start/stopping music playback. You can however get around that by using slimp3slave to stream the music without any lag as it emulates a squeezbox device. You can have multiple clients connect to the server and each client has it’s own mp3 stream and can control their own playlist.

You can also do last.fm track submitting by installing the slimscrobbler package.
