i am thinking we need to come up with something to add to the main page to dress it up a little and mabe add some more content that does not need alot of guides to work as writting guides seems to be something hard to get in to. i have a few ideas about what we can do to dress it up a little but i would like to get some more input on this from the rest of us?

I was thinking we could put some more sluts on the main page... or wait, this isn't a porn site.
How about a "tips" database with a user submit form and umm something. Could be just a collection of different little debian/linux tips categorized into a tree type structure and make them searchable through a simple keyword matching search. Would take a little work to program up but after it's done we'd be able to add little chunks of information to the site easily. Might be a good little evening project to code up sometime
As for the "guides" I've got a bunch in the back of my mind.. it's just a matter of actually doing it someday. Unfortunatly I suffer from a severe case of laziness.
Any other ideas? |

i have 1/4 of a artical and i suffer from the same thing as eccent. i was thinking mabe we could add a linux/debian news section and sum up some of the headline news on other sites that intrest us. we could also add a poll to the main page for people to vote on some stuff?

Sounds good to me. Polls are always fun And the news thing is great idea, but it would have to differ somehow from debianplanet.org otherwise there isn't much point obviously. Maybe focus more towards daily updates on topics closer to the OS itself? Although, thats alot of work aswell |

would it be hard and wrong to pull news feeds to the main page. mabe have a side colum for news feeds like these?
http://www.debianplanet.org/module.php?mod=import&op=feeds
just a thought i am sure we could have a script to pull them every 12 hours to a location to grab from there so we dont hit there server every load of the site? just have to give credit to the site feeding the news?

oh ya, that'd be sweet. All the news sites format there posts in xml like so:
http://www.debianplanet.org/module.php?mod=node&op=feed
And we'll just need to setup something to read that info and make a news page. A quick search on freshmeat finds a program called "fn" that will do the trick.
http://www.che.iitm.ac.in/~ch99057/software/
Just need to install it and set it up. I'll take a look into it when I get a chance. Of course, we could convert the site into more of a portal as well using some software such as phpNuke or Drupal (what debianplanet.org uses actually). They have the news modules built in of course.. oh and polls Maybe we should install it and take a look? |

so far the dru. is looking good i think we really need to work on getting a idea of what all is going whre now and mabe start to work on moving the stuff over to the main. right now it feels like there are to many almost the same places with all the user blogs and main blog and just so much i really think the forum is the main place for communication as it just seems simpler to fallow.
what is everyone else involded thinking about the user blog sections?

yeah, the user/main blog idea sounds pretty good. specially for this style of site.
i also like the forum. though not heavily used. it's pretty decent. |

the forum is still my fav thing. i have always been a fan of forums. forums just seem to make alot of sense and are a quick simple way to talk about something but not everyone has to be there at the same time to get the point.
