I though it might be useful to start a thread of some handy packages to install after you have initially installed a debian system. I'm refering to a desktop system based on sarge/sid and selected "desktop system" from the installer or tasksel. (which I believe is the wrapper package desktop-base)
Here are a couple packages I've found that don't get installed but are essential.
mozilla-xft - This gives all mozilla based browsers antialiased fonts which makes the web browsing expirence much more pleasing.
msttcorefonts - Installing this package installs all the most popular default windows fonts on your system (Ariel, Times New Roman, and so on) which I find are a must to make web pages look as they are designed.
flashplugin-nonfree - Downloads and installs the macromedia flash player plugin which kinda sucks, but is required to view many websites. (you need to have non-free apt sources for this obviously.
Does anyone have any others that they find essential? |

Java, although not a plugin (and you have already made a post on installing this). Not sure if a movie player is also included in the desktop system from taskselect but vlc has come a very long way.
